Summary

A lightning strike gave her a super power。。。but even a super genius can't solve the problem of middle school。 This smart and funny novel is perfect for fans of The Fourteenth GoldfishRain Reign, and Counting by Sevens

Lucy Callahan's life was changed forever when she was struck by lightning。 She doesn't remember it, but the zap gave her genius-level math skills, and she's been homeschooled ever since。 Now, at 12 years old, she's technically ready for college。 She just has to pass 1 more test--middle school!

Lucy's grandma insists: Go to middle school for 1 year。 Make 1 friend。 Join 1 activity。 And read 1 book (that's not a math textbook!)。 Lucy's not sure what a girl who does calculus homework for fun can possibly learn in 7th grade。 She has everything she needs at home, where nobody can make fun of her rigid routines or her superpowered brain。 The equation of Lucy's life has already been solved。 Unless there's been a miscalculation?

A celebration of friendship, Stacy McAnulty's smart and thoughtful middle-grade debut reminds us all to get out of our comfort zones and embrace what makes us different。

Fresh story, great characters, a winner! --Barbara O'Connor, author of Wish

This was a cute, light read。 I know at least middle schooler I want to recommend it to already。 I was fully expecting a less-than-happy ending, but this was a happy ending that also felt real/not cheesy。 All the problems have not been solved, and that's okay。 I did wish the mean girl character had been a little more three-dimensional; even in middle school, nobody's 100% mean like that。 。 。 This was a cute, light read。 I know at least middle schooler I want to recommend it to already。 I was fully expecting a less-than-happy ending, but this was a happy ending that also felt real/not cheesy。 All the problems have not been solved, and that's okay。 I did wish the mean girl character had been a little more three-dimensional; even in middle school, nobody's 100% mean like that。 。 。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading this book。 I could relate to the main character, Lucy, because I have developed OCD habits and have over sanitized since the pandemic began。 Lucy was struct by lightening which caused her to be a math genius but also caused her to have major OCD and caused her to be terrified of germs! I think this book would be fun to read in a middle school classroom。 It shows the importance of friendship and forgiving。 It also shows a young girl trying to fit in at new middle school (which I enjoyed reading this book。 I could relate to the main character, Lucy, because I have developed OCD habits and have over sanitized since the pandemic began。 Lucy was struct by lightening which caused her to be a math genius but also caused her to have major OCD and caused her to be terrified of germs! Lucy’s life changed after she got struck by lightning。 The lightning zapped a part of her brain which triggered something that made her crazy good at math, and before she got struck she was just like any other child, normal and naive。 Who knows what Lucy was like before she became a math genius, adventurous, creative, a daredevil? All she knows is that after she got struck she got more quiet, and a person who is really scared about gears and getting sick。 Lucy always has hand sanitizer, or wipes, or some form of wipe or spray。 Lucy has not been out of the house for a long time, and her Nana wanted Lucy to go to a school, an in person school with other kids, a middle school。 At school in math class there was a sort of test, and Lucy decided she was going to act like a normal person, so on purpose she put the wrong answers although she knew all of the right answers。 Lucy, Windy, and Levi are put into a group for a school project, and so far they have no clue what they are going to do。 They all went to an animal shelter, and decided they are going to try to get animals new homes。 Finally Lucy breaks the news to Windy, and Levi about her getting struck by lightning, and her crazy math abilities, and one of them can ont help but they spill the beans to a whole group of people, and their friendship waivers, but they try to make it up。 。。。more

A fifth grade student recommended this book to me。Math, friendships, a rescue dog, and a loving grandmother fill these pages。 I won't spoil which parts are the tear-jerkers。 A fifth grade student recommended this book to me。Math, friendships, a rescue dog, and a loving grandmother fill these pages。 I won't spoil which parts are the tear-jerkers。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The Miscalculations of lightning girl is a great book written by Stacy McAnulty。 The theme of this book is that knowledge does not change who you are。 I know because Lucy is really good at math, but that doesn’t change the person that she is because she still likes to hang out with other people, she doesn't like school, she is still almost normal, like everyone else, and she still has two best friends。 I think the genre of this book is probably fiction because usually you don’t get superhuman ma The Miscalculations of lightning girl is a great book written by Stacy McAnulty。 The theme of this book is that knowledge does not change who you are。 I know because Lucy is really good at math, but that doesn’t change the person that she is because she still likes to hang out with other people, she doesn't like school, she is still almost normal, like everyone else, and she still has two best friends。 I think the genre of this book is probably fiction because usually you don’t get superhuman math abilities from getting struck by lightning… but it could also be some other part in that category like realistic fiction。 The setting of this book is mostly at Lucy’s school, but it is also located at Cracker barrel, Windy’s house, the pet store, and the waterpark。 There are many characters in this story but the protagonists are Lucy, Nana, Windy, Mr。 Stoker, Levi (for most of it), Claire, and how could I forget about Pi! The protagonist is Maddie but Lucy would add in Ms。 Flemming。 Lucy first meets Windy, Mr。 Stoker, Levi and Mandy at school, and Windy decides to be her friend, Levi, her worst enemy。 Then Levi and Claire become her friends while they are working on a school project, and Maddie becomes her worst enemy。 I love this book because I love the struggle with Lucy and her germophobic troubles, because I can totally relate to them。 This book is great because even though Lucy is a savant, she is still a normal kid。 She loves candy, she hates most of school, she doesn’t like to read, and has a bunch of posters set up in her room。 Granted they are Fibonacci, not boy bands, but I give her effort for trying。 Lucy lives with her Nana because her parents are gone。 Her mom died when she was born, and her dad left when he found out he was going to have Lucy。 Once I started this book the first time, I could not put it down! Every chapter ends with a cliffhanger, and that’s what makes me keep wanting to read this book。 The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl is one of my favorite books ever。 I think this book is the best fit for 3rd graders to 7th graders just because of the topics in it。 。。。more

So fun, a bit like Star Girl。 I gave this book to my cousins daughter and will do a book club with her and friends (12 year olds) I look forward to seeing what they have to say。 Great read and a reminder to us all that being different is not only ok but welcome! Kids are cruel but everyone is dealing with something。 Smart Girls are very cool

This book has so much detail, which made me enjoy it more。 This is the kind of book that I can't stop reading。 At night, before I go to bed。 I tell myself only to read 1 chapter but I end up reading 4。 When this girl was very young she got struck by lightning! She went to the doctor and she found out she is a math genius。 She has always stayed at home because of her fear of germs。 Her grandma wants her to go to school。 Find out what happens when you read The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl。 This book has so much detail, which made me enjoy it more。 This is the kind of book that I can't stop reading。 At night, before I go to bed。 I tell myself only to read 1 chapter but I end up reading 4。 When this girl was very young she got struck by lightning! DNF: Chapter 18, Pg。 115。Just a very standard middle grade school story, with a predictable storyline。 The main character was the only thing that was interesting。 Unfortunately, not for me。

I had higher expectations。 I had read the first pages in which the savant mentioned Maryam Mirazkhani and I was immediately hooked。 Man was I wrong to think this is a book that would take me on a journey into the world of mathematics 。 Call me crazy but mentioning pi then random numbers then telling the reader what color they are and even worse doing mental math for clueless people is neither the work of a math genius nor qual to what can be an inspiring fictional rendering of mathematics。 All t I had higher expectations。 I had read the first pages in which the savant mentioned Maryam Mirazkhani and I was immediately hooked。 Man was I wrong to think this is a book that would take me on a journey into the world of mathematics 。 Call me crazy but mentioning pi then random numbers then telling the reader what color they are and even worse doing mental math for clueless people is neither the work of a math genius nor qual to what can be an inspiring fictional rendering of mathematics。 All that aside, being the emotional me, I shed a couple of tears when Lucy started bonding with Pi。 I just wish this wouldn't have turned into a total disappointment in the end。 Or maybe I chose the wrong book expecting something that was never promised in the first place。 。。。more

Mom had this on her to-read, and thought I would like it。first off。I hate math。 (Lucy looks at me, hurt)Buuuuuuuuuuuuuttttttttttt。。。 this book actually made it sound fun。I really liked the other characters, and how they were written。 the drama and the plot where well put together。I'm a little confused on her adoption logic。 if dogs get adopted faster than cats, then why do you still advertise the dogs。 THESE POOR CAT'S NEED HOMES!my one complaint: is how they portrayed homeschoolers。Sure, there Mom had this on her to-read, and thought I would like it。first off。I hate math。 (Lucy looks at me, hurt)Buuuuuuuuuuuuuttttttttttt。。。 this book actually made it sound fun。I really liked the other characters, and how they were written。 the drama and the plot where well put together。I'm a little confused on her adoption logic。 if dogs get adopted faster than cats, then why do you still advertise the dogs。 THESE POOR CAT'S NEED HOMES!my one complaint: is how they portrayed homeschoolers。Sure, there may be kids who ask to be homeschooled Because they are reclusive。 but that is about 5% of homeschoolers or less。 (don't quote me on that。 I'm just basing this on the other homeschoolers I meet and know。)I was about to throw the book through my wall when I got to the end, where she starts contemplating whether or not she should go to the swanky collage, or stay in middle school。*sigh。still, it was a fun and interesting read, something that I don't usually pick up, but it was enjoyable。 。。。more

I was immediately sucked into this story about a 12 year old girl with acquired savant syndrome who goes to middle school for the first time。 I read this book in one day。 I felt like Lucy’s character felt real and true。 I was invested in her story。 I really enjoyed this book。 It had strong Counting by 7’s vibes, another fantastic book。

“Middle school is supposed to be the worst。 It’s like a giant hazing for adulthood。 We all gotta go through it。” Starting off this review with the most relatable quote in the book。 I’m sure if I read this book when I was a seventh grader, I would’ve loved it even more。 Lucy is such a likeable character and I connected with her about a lot of things (fitting in at school, insecurities, the difficulty making friends, fear of germs, etc。)。 I like how the author portrayed middle school and the type “Middle school is supposed to be the worst。 It’s like a giant hazing for adulthood。 We all gotta go through it。” Starting off this review with the most relatable quote in the book。 I’m sure if I read this book when I was a seventh grader, I would’ve loved it even more。 Lucy is such a likeable character and I connected with her about a lot of things (fitting in at school, insecurities, the difficulty making friends, fear of germs, etc。)。 I like how the author portrayed middle school and the type of people you meet during that time, from the popular ones who just don’t want you as a part of their group to the ones who stick to you like glue。 Middle school was the worst for me, but through that experience, I learned a lot of life lessons that I couldn’t have learned if I didn’t go to middle school。 。。。more
